The douzain was a new denomination meant to replace the grand blanc by artificially inflating the value from 10 to 12 deniers. The reign of Henry IV marks the beginning of the House of Bourbon. Henry was both a Protestant and the King of Navarre before the death of Henry III, but he famously converted to Catholicism in order to become king of France. His title as King of Navarre is reflected in the legend of this coin.
