ENGLAND: Elizabeth I (1558-1603), AR Sixpence, Third and Fourth issue, dated 1569. Tower (London) mint (coronet), 2.63 g, 26mm.
Obv: Crowned bust left; rose to right.
Rev: Coat-of-arms over long cross fourchée.
North 1997; SCBC 2562
(Rare 1568 dies have an inverted eight that looks similar to the digit on the right, so it is barely possible – but extremely unlikely – that this is a 1568 rather than a 1569.)
From TheRed Collection.
This coin is dated to the year of “The Rising in the North,” when three northern Earls rebelled and attempted to place Mary, Queen of Scots on the throne. They were soundly defeated by Elizabeth's forces.
