Description

★ Regency of Galla Placidia ★

Valentinian III (425-455) AE4. Cyzicus, 1.04g, 12mm. Issued 425-435 during the regency of Galla Placidia. Extremely rare, only three on acsearch.
Obv: DN VALENTINIANO PF AVG; Pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right.
Rev: CONCORDIA AVG; Concordia or Victory standing facing holding wreath in each hand.
RIC X 438 page 274 (R3), discussed page 92f.; tesorillo.com type 7; Esty type 67.
From the Severus Alexander collection, Ex Brian Bucklan.
A decent example with a clear obverse legend, better than the photo; clearly an official mint product. The obverse legend determines this is from Cyzicus; the only other mint to produce this rare type was Constantinople.
After the defeat of Johannes in 425, Valentinian (aged only 6) was installed as Western Emperor under the regency of his mother, Galla Placidia. This coin would be a good stand-in for a Placidia, and is in fact even scarcer.
