Description

Denmark. Knud den Store (the Great). 1019-1035. AR Penning (19mm, 1.58 g, 4h). Quatrefoil type, Lund mint. Struck after 1018. + CNVT REX ANGLORVM, crowned bust left in quatrefoil / + HILDRED MO EO, voided long cross with triple-crescent ends and pellet at center, over quatrefoil. Malmer chain 151, dies 9.701.1914; Hauberg 3. Struck with worn dies. Extremely Fine.

Although the reverse and obverse legends are readable it is die linked into the Danish chain 151. This chain contains blundered obverse Pointed Helmet paired with quatrefoil obverse which is typical for Scandinavian coinage of the time. The style of the dies, however, suggest that they were transferred from England. 2 die identical coins were recorded by Malmer.
