Description

Alexius III Angelus-Comnenus. 1195-1203. BI aspron trachy (26.8 mm, 3.51 g, 6 h). Constantinople mint. + KЄ [RO]HΘЄI, Nimbate bust of Christ facing wearing pallium and colobium, raising hand in benediction and holding scroll, IC XC to left and right / AΛЄΞIOC ΔЄCΠ K[ωNsΤANTI] (or similar), Alexius standing facing on left and nimbate St. Constantine on right; both are bearded and wearing crown, divitsion and loros; they hold between them globus cruciger and each holds labarum in outer hand. SBCV 2012. Good VF for type, sharp details, particularly on reverse which is interestingly double-struck creating illusion of 3 figures, obverse devices less garbled than typical.
