Manuel I, Comnenus. 1143-1180. BI scyphate trachy (22.4 mm, 1.99 g, 5 h). "officially" clipped Æ or Billon scyphate. Current in its clipped form in Bulgaria ca. 1150-1175. [O]ЄMMA - [NυHΛ], nimbate bust of Christ facing, beardless, wearing pallium and collobium, raising hand in benediction; legend to left and right. / [M]ANυHΛ - Δ[/ЄC/ΠO/TH] (or similar), Manuel, bearded, standing facing, wearing crown, divitsion and chlamys, holding labarum and globus cruciger surmounted by patriarchal cross. Host coin: SBCV 1963, 64 or 65, or similar . Fair / VF, obverse terrible as usual - reverse exceptionally nice with desert patina contrast.
These were created to compete with and circulate alongside contemporary Bulgarian types (which also were in imitation Byzantine types)
