Description

Lead seal of Peter honorary consul and kommerkiarios of the Apothekeof...and Ikarias(period of emperor Constantinos Pogonatos, indictio 5th= AD 677/678)
Obverse: In the upper half, bust of Constantine IV, bearded, wearing a helmet (which ties to the left) and a cuirass, holding a spear behind his head in his right hand and a shield in his left hand, circular inscriptionaround him, ΙΝ-Δ(ΙΚΤΙΩΝ)Ε´= ἸνδικτιὼνΕ´(fifth indiction). In the lower half of the field, 4lines of inscription, ΠΕΤΡΟΥΑΠΟΥ/ΠΑΤΩΝSΓΕΝΙ/ΚΟΥΚΟΜΜΕΡΚΙ/ΑΡΙΟΥ= Πέτρουἀπὸὑπάτωνκαὶγενικοῦκομμερκιαρίου. No visible border.
Reverse: In the upper half, facing busts ofHerakleios at left and Tiberios at right; each wears a chlamys and holds a globus cruciger in his right hand. In the lower half of the field, 3 lines of an inscription partly surviving, ΑΠΟΘΗΚΗC/.ΚΑΓΕΡΑC/ΙΚΑΡΙΑC= ἀποθήκης.καγέραςκαὶἸκαρίας, no visibleborder.Commentary: The owner of this seal is a known person attested in this period from several other seals (Zacos-Veglery I, 146, table 2). The date of the seal is established thanks to both the iconographyand the indictio it bears. It is certainly before the deposition of Herakleios and Tiberios in 681; and it bears a portrait of Constantine IV that appears on coins after 674: cf. Grierson,CatalogueII/2, 514, 516.So, according to the 5th indiction, the seal can be safely dated to year 677/678(Grumel, Chronologia, p. 247).
