The Greek kylix is a type of ancient ceramic drinking cup characterized by its shallow, broad bowl and horizontal handles. Popular from the 6th to the 4th centuries BCE, the kylix was commonly used during symposiums, the social drinking parties of ancient Greece. Its design allowed for ease of use while reclining, which was typical during these gatherings. The kylix's wide rim and low profile made it ideal for holding and sipping wine, often diluted with water, in a leisurely and communal setting. The shape and functionality of the kylix reflect the importance of drinking customs and social interaction in Greek culture.

One of the most notable features of Greek kylixes is their decoration. The exterior and interior of these cups were often adorned with intricate and colorful scenes painted by skilled artisans. The most famous decoration technique used on kylixes is the red-figure and black-figure styles. The black-figure technique, which was prevalent earlier, involved painting figures in a black slip on the natural red clay, while the red-figure technique, which emerged later, allowed for more detailed and dynamic depictions by painting the background black and leaving the figures in red. Common themes on kylixes include mythological scenes, athletic competitions, and everyday life, providing valuable insights into Greek art, beliefs, and daily activities.

The kylix also played a role in the development of Greek art and aesthetics. Its design and decoration evolved over time, reflecting changes in artistic styles and techniques. The shift from black-figure to red-figure pottery marked a significant advancement in Greek ceramic art, allowing for greater detail and naturalism in the depiction of human figures and scenes. Additionally, the kylix's use in various rituals and its depiction in art highlight its cultural significance, serving not only as a functional drinking vessel but also as a canvas for artistic expression and a marker of social status.
