Medieval Seal Matrix with The Pelican in Her Piety 14th-15th century A.D. A seal matrix composed of a discoid die and tapering shank with pierced terminal, die with central motif of pelican perched on a nest, the common Christian motif of “the Pelican in her piety” a symbol of Christ’s sacrifice – the pelican was believed to peck its own breast in order to feed its chicks on its blood; surrounding 'IE SV SEL DAMOR' legend, a common Anglo-French inscription meaning “I am the seal of love” but which also incorporates “amuletic ambiguity” in that the first two words also spell IESV [Jesus]; accompanied by an impression. See Jones, M., 'Sacred and profane: 'Reinforcement and amuletic ambiguity in the late medieval lead badge corpus' in Amsterdamer Beiträge zur älteren Germanistik 59 (2004), 111-137. 5.12 grams, 18 mm (3/4 in.).
