Description

Roman Cornucopia Gemstone in Gold Ring 3rd century A.D. A jasper gemstone with incised cornucopia in later gold ring with polygonal hoop. Cf. Ruseva-Slokoska, L., Roman Jewellery, Sofia, 1991, item 216, for the type. 5.31 grams, 24.72mm overall, 18.19 x 19.90 mm internal diameter (approximate size British Q, USA 8, Europe 17.49, Japan 16) (1 in.). European private collection, 1970-1980s. London, UK, late 1990s. The form of the ring (close to type VI, variant 1 of the Ruseva-Slokoska classification) is typical of the 3rd century A.D. The cornucopia was a symbol of goddess Fortuna. Figurines of Fortuna tend to depict the goddess holding the cornucopia in her right arm, and single cornucopia refer to the abundance and prosperity given by the goddess to the wearer of the ring.
