After Elizabeth removed Ivan III from power, she withdrew his coinage and had them recoined in 1741, 1742 and 1743. The coin here, though, is clearly not overstruck. The eagle on this coin’s reverse is unique to Roubles of Elizabeth and is similar to the reverse eagle of Ivan – apparently the eagle used on the master hub of the Ivan III Rouble (Diakov 3). While Bitkin records this type, he offers no explanation. Which is not surprising has there has yet to be an examination or discussion of the minting technique of the time – even in the Konros 2018 edition. In this cataloger’s opinion, the eagle hub for the reverse die of Ivan’s Roubles were kept and reused at the Moscow mint for a limited time
