Description

ANCIENT GREECE. KARIA, MYLASA(?).
Silver Tetartemorion, circa 420-376 BC.
Obv: head of ram right. Rev: young male head (Apollo?) facing slight right within circular incuse.

About Good Very Fine; attractive cabinet tone.

The attribution of this intriguing and seemingly unique miniature coin to Mylasa remains uncertain. Although the 'Apollo' head type is commonly featured on numerous issues from Mylasa, the presence of the ram's head on the obverse complicates this identification. This particular obverse type is predominantly associated with coins from the so-called 'Uncertain Mint H,' believed to have been located in Caria, as well as with a few types from the region of Troas (e.g., SNG Copenhagen 256). As a result, it is currently not possible to definitively determine the coin's minting origin, though Caria, with Mylasa as a strong candidate, remains the most plausible location.

Acquired from Odysseus Numismatique.

Reference: HNO-960 var. (Apollo to rev. - 'Uncertain Mint H') and 2055 var. (ram to obv. - 'Mylasa'); Klein-507 var. (same); SNG Tübingen-3312 var. (same).
Rarity: Unpublished and seemingly unique.
Die Axis: 6h.
Diameter: 5 mm.
Weight: 0.17 g.
