PADUAN & LATER IMITATIONS: ATREBATES: Verica, 10-40 AD, "AR stater" (4.59g), cf. BMC 1146-58 & Mack 121, unpublished imitation of "Warrior Rex"-type gold stater of Verica, likely 19th-20th century fantasy; COM with line above and below // horse galloping right under star, R E X around, smoothing in field, choice VF. A client king of Rome, Verica was defeated by a rival tribe and exiled from Britain. This provided the excuse for the Claudian invasion in 43 AD that culminated in the establishment of Roman Britain.
