Description

ROMAN EMPIRE: Augustus, 27 BC - 14 AD, AR denarius (3.74g), Lugdunum, RIC-207; RSC-43, struck 2 BC to 4 AD, laureate head right, CAESAR AVGVSTVS / DIVI F PATER PATRIAE // Caius and Lucius standing front, each togate and resting hand on shield with spear, lituus and simpulum in between, AVGVSTI F COS DESIG PRINC IVVENT, C L CAESARES in exergue, pitting, two testmarks on obverse, VF. Born to Marcus Agrippa and Julia the Elder, Caius Caesar and Lucius Caesar were adopted by Augustus as joint-heirs. This coin commemorates their appointment as designated consuls and first among the youth. Neither, however, would outlive their grandfather and sit on Rome's throne.
