GREAT BRITAIN: AE penny token, 1795, D&H-28, "White Negress" sideshow token, full figure of a black woman standing on the obverse with the legend, MRS. NEWSHAM THE WHITE NEGRESS // TO BE HAD AT THE CURIOSITY HOUSE CITY ROAD / NEAR / FINSBURY SQUARE / LONDON / 1795, an exceptional quality example! AU. Amelia Lewsham or Amelia Harlequin or Amelia Newsham (ca. 1748-1797) was a Jamaican albino known as the "White Negress". In 1795 she was being exhibited by Thomas Hall in Finsbury Square and possibly at Bartholomew Fair. Souvenir tokens were minted by W. Lutwtyche of Birmingham.
