KAITHAL: Desu Singh, 1767-1781, AR rupee (11.11g), "Sahrind", ND, KM-—, 6-petal rosette in the N of bichun on the obverse, triplet of pellets between the U and S of jalus, VF-EF, R, ex Mohun Singh Collection. The attributions of most coins of Kaithal is rather tentative, except for the standard issues assigned to Desu Singh (3 pellets reverse) and most assigned to Lal Singh (4 pellets), partly because some pieces bear Hijri or Vikram dates within their known reign years. The assignments to Partap Singh and Udai Singh are tentative, and I have followed for these rupees the suggestions of the consignor. The very crude examples assigned to Desu Singh have alternatively been assigned to Udai Singh, and it is quite likely that they were emergency issues at some point. I have followed the consignor's assignment to Desu Singh. The most important symbol for Kaithal is the 6-petal or 8-petal rosette (occasionally 7-petal) that appears within the letter N of "bichun" on the obverse (except for the crude style issues), but the rosette is frequently off flan.
