NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES: Java, AR cob token (20.56g), ND (ca. 1700?), 27x28mm (roughly square) imitation cob, apparently used in trade equivalent to 8 reales, light corrosion, somewhat crude, well struck, but well executed for a local issue, F-VF, RRR, ex Format Sale 42, Lot 2135, January 1991 (with tag). Garry Charmin of Format wrote this for their catalog: "Java local issue cob token. This recent discovery was brought to one of the London dealers on a trip to the Far East. Apparently one of two similar pieces discovered in Java. The design roughly mimics that of a cob 8 reales, but the cross on the reverse is reminiscent of those on Portuguese Colonial coins, which would have circulated in Timor. The other piece that came to light with this one was purchased by the British Museum. These pieces are apparently previously unpublished."
