Description

FATIMID: al-'Aziz, 975-996, AR narrow dirham (2.56g), al-Mansuriya, AH366, A-Y705, 22.5 mm; local North African version of the full dirham, struck with narrow dies with short letters in all the text, VF, RRRR. The only other example of this type was struck at Atrabulus in Libya, DM, sold in our Auction 44, lot 1880. The North African examples are narrow and with short letters, whereas the Syrian version, struck at Filastin and 4 other mints, are typically 25-27mm in diameter, with tall letters in the text. There is a third version (A-X705) that cites the caliphal heir al-Mansur in horizontal legends in the obverse & reverse centers, struck at Dimashq & Tarabulus (in Lebanon) AH382-386 (none on CoinArchives).
