Description

HADHRAMAUT: AE unit (1.74g), ca. 3rd century AD, Huth (cf. Huth-463, right-facing head and bull), Zeno, male head left with plaited hair // bull standing left, SYN in South Arabian script above, Sh[QR] running downward to left, lightly off-center strike on reverse, possibly unique, VF. This is the first example of the bull-type coinage of Hadhramaut to appear in an auction and the only one we can find with a left-facing head and bull. The word SYN refers to Sayyin, the supreme deity of the Kingdom of Hadhramaut, for whom the bull has been interpreted as a symbol. The word ShQR refers to Shaqar, the royal palace in the capital city of Shabwa. Given the similarity of this coin with Huth-463 (tentatively attributed by Huth to Yada`il or Yada`b), it is likely issued during the same period.

Estimate: USD 150 - 200
