UNITED STATES: AR medal, MD (1878), HK-136, Baker-449, Julian-CM-48, 41mm silver medal by William Barber commemorating the departure of the Continental Army from Valley Forge; GEORGE WASHINGTON above bust of Washington right, COMMANDER IN CHIEF below, BARBER below truncation, all within beaded circle // VALLEY FORGE CENTENNIAL / 1778-1878 in outer margin, IN / COMMEMORATION / OF THE / DEPARTURE / OF THE / CONTINENTAL / ARMY / JUNE 19 within open wreath within beaded circle, AU, RR. This medal commemorates the 100th anniversary of departure of the Continental Army from Valley Forge on June 19, 1778. It was authorized by the 45th Congress in 1878, designed and engraved by William Barber, and was struck originally in 1880 at the Philadelphia Mint with a reported mintage of only 63 struck. One of the more rare US silver mint medals of the 19th century.
