UNITED STATES: AR 50 cents, 1937-S, KM-178, Columbia South Carolina Sesquicentennial Commemorative, a fantastic lustrous example! PCGS graded MS66. The Sesquicentennial Commission selected a local artist from Columbia’s Clemson College to design the coin. Scultpor A. Wolfe Davidson’s initial attempts were not accepted, and the Commission of Fine Arts had to work with the artist to make major changes. In the end, his models were deemed satisfactory, and were approved on July 22, 1936. Davidson’s obverse design features a standing, facing figure of Justice, flanked at left by the Old State House of 1790 and at right by the New State House built between 1855 and 1907. The reverse of the Columbia half is dominated by the state’s symbol, the palmetto tree.
