Description

TENASSERIM-PEGU: Anonymous, 17th-18th century, octagonal large tin coin, cast (59.12g), Robinson-9 (Plate 7.5), 53.5mm; hintha bird right, on pedestal, 2 Chinese characters above, min an (the people of peace) // stylized 3-line Burmese legend, with small square in the center, thus imitating the center of a Chinese or Vietnamese cash coin, clear surfaces, without any casting flaws, bold VF, RRR. On virtually all the large coins of Tenasserim, the tin is mixed with varying amounts of lead, with lead dominant in some examples. Another example of this extremely rare type was sold in our Auction 33, Lot 977.
