ABBASID: al-Mutawakkil, 847-861, AV dinar (3.64g), Surra man Ra 'a, AH236, A-229.2, Bernardi-157Jc, the denomination al-dinar recut over al-dirham and the mint name surra man ra 'a recut over samarqand; the reuse of dies originally intended for silver rather than gold explains why this dinar is much broader than normal gold dinars for al-Mutawakkil, VF, RR. This is a very early example of a re-engraved mint name, which was common only from about the time of al-Mu 'tadid until al-Radi (ca. AH280s to 320s).
