Description

SASANIAN KINGDOM: Hormizd I, 272-273, AR drachm (3.92g), G-38, king's bust, wearing simple cap with 6 curls and korymbos // fire altar guarded by two assistants facing the fire, each holding a small spear, king's name to left (clearly legible on this example!), 1 tiny chip, EF, RR. There are 2 variations of the reverse of Hormizd I, both with the king Hormizd to the left of the fire-altar, the deity Mithra to the right. On the more common type (Göbl-36), the king extends his arm and Mithra holds a diadem. On the rarer type (Göbl-38, including this piece), both the king and Mithra hold a sword pointing upwards.
