CHILE. 8 Reales, 1787-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles III. NGC AU Details--Cleaned.
KM-31; FC-25; EL-36; Cal-Type-110 # 1026. Mintage: 183,000. Despite having the second highest mintage of any Santiago Mint Charles III 8 Reales issue, this date is quite RARE, and was missing from most of the legendary collections of the type that have been sold in last half-century, including the Faistauer, Ray Johnson and Amat collections. This example, one of few appearing on the market in the last decade, remains in an exceptionally pleasing state, with sharp detail through the designs and sparkling luster in the softly toned fields. The assigned "Cleaned" designation, seemingly rather harsh, seems to refer to some extremely insignificant hairlines on the both sides. More significant to the appearance are a few marks that blend into Charles III's neck, but these too are no reason for alarm when placed in context. Altogether, a beautiful example that would serve admirably as either an example of the type, or a vital piece to a collection that is aiming for completion by date.
