Appealing Heavy Mohur with Punchmarked Date

An EXTREMELY RARE emission of Akbar from the thirtieth year of his reign, this anonymous Mohur delivers an enchanting story to match the splendid beauty of the piece. Akbar introduced the Ilahi style coinage in the 30th year of his reign, and this piece represents amongst the earliest Ilahi style coinage produced. The style is beautiful, with the Ilhai inscription rendered with particular attractivity. The actual handling is limited, with only light wear on the surfaces, and a few punches on the edge. The "30" countermark is bold, and offers an intriguing history as a post mint correction to the oversight of not playing the Ilhai era date that would be somewhat common on Akbar's later coinage. For completeness, we note that both NGC and PCGS have declined to encapsulate this example, NGC citing altered surfaces and PCGS for ineligible type. Nevertheless, we believe this to be a genuine representative from the reign of Akbar, and this Mohur offers the chance for any advanced collector of Mughal coinage to add to their holdings.
