Description

(t) CHINA. Southern Song Dynasty. Gold Leaf Tael, ND (ca. 1127-1279). VERY FINE.
China Numismatic Museum-220. Weight: 37.52 gms. "Chén èrláng tiě xiàn xiàng shífēn jīn". Complete sheet of ten leaves folded like pieces of papers. Each sheet is stamped in the corners and at the center. An incredible artifact with attractive light dusty patina in the protected areas. Crinkled surfaces as is common for objects of this type and would be expected from such thin metal nearly 800 years old. Inscriptions are clear in some parts, but mostly only portions with enough throughout to have the whole inscription. One leaf has a hole mentioned for accuracy. Otherwise a well preserved example with a nice look and lots of history. For many decades Gold Leaf money from the Southern Song Dynasty was unknown to exist. However, in recent years a number have come onto the market confirming their existence. Examples of this type have been discovered in Hangzhou, Huzhou, Wenzhou, in Zhejiang Province each with different inscriptions.

(t) On September 1, 2019, the United States enacted new tariffs on collector's items of Chinese origin, including bullion and numismatic coins and banknotes.
