ROMANIA. Institutului de Finantare Externa (INFINEX). 1 Leu, ND (1941-44). P-M17. PCGS Banknote Choice Very Fine 35.
Issued during the occupation of the Transnistria region by Romania, this is the initial denomination issued for use by Romanian forces in this area, that continues to be an area of conflict even to this day. The other denominations of this series range from the 6 Leu (see the next lot) to 1200 Leu. The unusual denominations of this rare series were the result of the Reichsmark - Leu exchange rate at the time. During World War II, the Transnistria region, located between the Dniester and Bug rivers, was occupied by Romanian and German forces, who used it as a base for their military operations against Russia and as a site for harsh treatment of local Jewish and Romani populations. These notes appear to have been issued in very limited numbers, and are seldom offered for sale in any grade. This and the next lot are the first time we have ever offered notes from this series in our extensive auction history.
