IRAQ. National Bank of Iraq. 10 Dinars, 1947 (ND 1953). P-36cts. Color Trial Specimen. PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.
An exciting offering, especially at this grade level, as this is surely one of the best preserved and most appealing examples of this rare color trial specimen of the Kingdom of Iraq in existence. A handful of these came to the market over a decade ago, but they have all been dispersed, and offerings of any Iraqi color trial specimen is infrequent at best. The issued notes of this denomination were printed in predominantly purple shades, contrasting with the green color seen on this color trial. It features a single punch hole cancellation and red specimen overprint, along with all zero serial numbers. While dated 1947 this type was not introduced into circulation until May of 1953, and we suspect this color trial specimen was created at about the same time. As stated in a previous lot PMG no longer publishes population reports for color trial specimens, but a look at auction records of the past decade reveal no other PMG graded gems of this color trial appearing at auction anywhere. As such, a magnificent and important opportunity for the Middle Eastern specialist to acquire an extremely rare note from the final years of the Kingdom of Iraq.
