GREAT BRITAIN. Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury. 5 Shillings, ND (1919). P-352. T27. PMG About Uncirculated 50 Net. Repaired.
A fantastic 5/- fractional note surely missing from even the most advanced collections. This design was first printed in early 1918 with the signature of John Bradbury as Secretary to the Treasury. A massive 17.5 million notes of this denomination were distributed to clearing banks but never issued, and later destroyed, and today none are known with the Bradbury signature. In 1919 the same quantity was also printed with the signature of Norman Fisher, which is the type seen here. Like its predecessor, notes with this signature were never officially issued either, but a small quantity were saved (perhaps by walking out of the back door when nobody was looking) and eventually entered the collector market. Many show damage of some sort, but as this design is unavailable in any other form, demand for any and all pieces remains high, with most tucked away in long-term collections. We have never offered this type before in our lengthy auction history, and the PMG population report shows just three examples graded, of which this has received the highest numerical grade. It appears that it was mounted at some point and later repaired, but the eye-appeal is quite nice. PMG Comments "Repaired."
