FRANCE. Tresor Public. 50 Nouveaux Francs on 5000 Francs, ND (1960). P-M15. PMG About Uncirculated 50.
Surely missing from even the most advanced French (or German) collections, this is one of the finest known examples of the rare 50 Nouveaux Francs on 5000 Francs issued in 1960. These notes, which were first introduced in 1955, were to be used exclusively by French forces in the French zones of occupied Germany. Numerous denominations were issued at that time, printed by the Banque de France, with unique (and quite lovely) designs. In 1960, after the introduction of the Nouveaux Franc, unused stock was overprinted with new denominations, as seen here. Listed in the Pick catalog under French military issues and in the Banknote Book under the Federal Republic of Germany, these notes had small print runs with very low survival rates. This particular example of the 50 Nouveaux Francs is one of just three such notes presently graded by PMG, and auction appearances are few and far between. If you have been waiting to acquire this rare military type or are perhaps just now learning about the fascinating history of these notes don't let this one go, as we are not sure when we will be able to offer it again.
