Description

1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 37.4-k.1, W-4115. Rarity-3. Draped Bust Left. EF-40 (PCGS).
160.0 grains. Glossy and smooth olive brown. Struck on a flan of good integrity with only a single tiny flaw near 12 o'clock on the obverse, and quite well preserved ever since. Centered a bit low on the obverse, but to no detriment as the legends are full. Higher centering on the reverse impacts the top of Liberty's head, the tip of the pole and the tops of ET, but other elements are clear and sharp with the date complete and enveloped in a full toothed border. A nice provenance back to 1904, and a trivial edge dent noted both by the Chapmans in 1904 and by Ryder on his ticket, but really not that consequential on this otherwise lovely coin. Cataloged by the Chapmans as "C. 37-c," but noted on the Ryder collection ticket as 37.8-k.1, using the more modern Hall numbering scheme.
PCGS# 687368. NGC ID: 2B2X.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier from S.H. and H. Chapman's sale of the Ralph R. Barker Collection, July 1904, lot 381; Hillyer C. Ryder; F.C.C. Boyd; John J. Ford, Jr.; Anthony Terranova; Jim LaSarre, via John Agre and Dave Wnuck (Coin Rarities Online), June 2006.
