1787 Fugio Cent. Pointed Rays. Newman 16-N, W-6925. Rarity-3. STATES UNITED, 4 Cinquefoils. EF Details--Damage (PCGS).
150.0 grains. Handsome medium brown surfaces with intermingled olive-gold highlights. The texture shows good gloss, and the strike is only trivially off center to 9 o'clock on both sides, affecting only the denticulation. We do, however, note minor softness at the left and right obverse borders, where some original planchet roughness is seen. There are no significant flan flaws and hardly any post-production blemishes, the shallow obverse dent on the sundial at Roman numeral I that explains the PCGS qualifier being rather well concealed and easily enough overlooked under more casual observation. In sum, this piece presents exceptionally well for the grade, so well, in fact, that Kessler selected it as his plate coin for the Newman 16-N dies. Reverse Die State B, with a faint crack from the border through ring 3.
PCGS# 878106. NGC ID: 2B8E.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier ex Richard Picker; Tom Rinaldo, July 30, 2008. The plate coin for the Newman 16-N dies in the Kessler reference on Fugio cents.
