The Short-Lived Castle Cob Type
PERU. Cob Escudo, 1698-L H. Lima Mint. Charles II. PCGS AU-58.
Fr-5; KM-27; Cal-816. Emanating from a VERY RARE and exceptionally brief series, this cob issue departs from the usual obverse iconography of various monarchs, opting instead for a more spartan design in the form of a simple castle-- usually merely a single element among many in the complex coat-of-arms of Spain. Well centered and pleasingly struck, with parts of all three date numerals in the date clear. Elevating its desirability that much more is the high state of preservation and the added provenance.
From the S.P. Rutherford Collection. Ex: Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (American Numismatic Rarities/Spink - 4/2005) Lot # 3451 (acquired from Clapp estate, 1942). Ex: John H. Clapp Collection.
