COLOMBIA. Cob 8 Reales, 1653-NRo PoRAS. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogota) Mint. Philip IV. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, VF Details.
KM-7.1; Cal-1553; Restrepo-M46.15. Weight: 26.12 gms. This charming sea-salvaged cob is a great representative of this popular pillar design unique to Colombia. Mintmark, assayer, and denomination are all easily spotted, though the date is slightly harder to make out due to off-centering and the mild roughness resulting from saltwater submersion. A pleasing dark gunmetal coloration adds to the coin's rustic eye appeal.
From the S.P. Rutherford Collection. Ex: Gilt Dragon Shipwreck, sunk 1656 (with Western Australian Museum certificate numbered 4005).
