FRANCE. Constitution. White Metal Reverse Cliché or Trial for Écu de 6 Livres, Year 2 (1791). Paris Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS MS-61.
cf. Maz-67 (for full design); Gad-48.(e); cf. Ciani-2225-6 (for full design in silver and copper). Type I. By A. Dupré. Weight: 5.08 gms. Gunmetal gray in hue, with some hints of dusty amber sprinkled about. Margolis notes that "...there seem to be two marks over the rooster's head which are slightly more prominent here than on the other uniface impressions and on the reverses of the completed essays in silver and copper. " Indeed, one can ascertain two engraved marks resembling tildes over the head of the cock. Additionally, the "O" in "LOI" appears to have been engraved over an inadvertent "A," as parts of that letter are clearly visible.
From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Marcel Platt in Paris on 13 November 1962).
