1870 United States Assay Commission Medal. JK AC-8. Rarity-3. Aluminum. Specimen. Unc Details--Environmental Damage (PCGS).
33 mm. Oxidation at right obverse. While the 1870 is the most plentiful of all 19th century Assay Commission medals, the vast majority are struck in copper. Relatively few pieces exist in aluminum, as here, a metal that at the time was more valuable than gold. This lot includes a custom white lucite holder for the medal printed U.S. ASSAY / MEDAL 1870.
