Obverse: Bust of Nelson left and wrecked ship right at center superimposed on crossed flags, anchor to right and seaman to left, crown above, beach below, legend around SHIPWRECKED FISHERMEN & MARINERS ROYAL BENEVOLENT SOCIETY / ESTABs. BY ACT PARLt. 1850; Reverse: Legend in center PRESENTED / FOR / HEROIC EXERTIONS / IN SAVING LIFE / FROM DROWNING / JOB XXIX13., legend around ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY; Edge: Edward Salmund Esq. 1855. This finely engraved piece offers boldly struck frosty devices with intricate design elements. The fields display much reflectivity with a pale golden color. Close inspection reveals light hairlines in the open areas, though nothing of any significance. A pleasing example of this seldom encountered type that is sure to add depth the next collection it enters. The recipient, Mr. Edward Salmund Esq., was awarded this medal for his heroic actions taken in Algoa Bay 19 September 1854. He organized the rescue of passengers and crew from the transport ship Charlotte that ran ashore on a reef of rock in the Bay. Since the founding of the society only 40 gold medals have been issued.
