Important Newfoundland Cash Note Rarity
CANADA-NEWFOUNDLAND. Newfoundland Government Cash Note. 80 Cents, 1903. NF-4c. PMG Choice Fine 15.
New to the census, which now stands at just four notes, of which this is probably the nicest outside the piece in the National Currency Collection (which is very similar in grade to the piece offered here today). It certainly is the nicest of the trio of notes that are in collector's hands. The Newfoundland Cash Notes are unique in the Canadian series for the simple fact that the year was updated with each new fiscal year. As a result, these notes, which were issued in denominations ranging from 40 cents to $5 is rife with rarities. Like the 1903 80 Cents offered here many date varieties have less than a handful of pieces known. While most collectors would be satisfied with a single 80 cents note as a type note (the 1901 is the most available with eighteen pieces available) if you are looking to build a more advanced collection of these notes strongly consider the piece offered here. Newfoundland Cash Notes were issued by the Department of Public Works and were initially used for materials and labor for road construction. They were signed and issued by each local road superintendent as needed. PMG Comments "Stains."
