1882 Pattern Liberty Head Nickel. Judd-1680, Pollock-1882. Rarity-6-. Nickel. Plain Edge. Proof-66 Cameo (PCGS). CAC.
Obv: Bust of Liberty facing left, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around and the date 1882 below. The portrait is similar to that adopted for regular issue Liberty Head nickel production in 1883. Rev: The Roman numeral V within a wreath of corn and cotton, with the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM above the wreath. A faint blue iridescence graces the otherwise bright silver surfaces of this premium Gem Proof. The deeply frosted devices intricately project from the watery and reflective fields, exhibiting a stunning cameo contrast. The design elements of the adopted Liberty Head nickel of 1883 are generally here, save for the obverse stars, which pressed UNITED STATES OF AMERICA to the periphery of the reverse and moved E PLURIBUS UNUM to the base of that side instead of at the top, as here. One can almost envision holding this coin and passing it back and forth, and saying change this, move this here, and I like the head of Liberty, leave that alone. Tied for finest known for this Judd number, and the glorious Cameo contrast adds considerable eye appeal to an already gorgeous Gem example of this important pattern issue.
