1850 Liberty Head Double Eagle. AU-55 (PCGS).
A vibrant saffron-yellow hue paints the facade of this gorgeous inaugural-issue representative. Considerable luster glistens in the protected regions, complementing the faint prooflike reflectivity apparent in the fields on each side. The surfaces are handsomely preserved despite light, delicate circulation, lacking in any significant marks or hairlines and remaining fully composed under a glass. Die file marks under Liberty's chin and signs of lapping on the obverse betray this piece as a product of a later die state, though the devices remain wholly bold and well-defined. Similarly, a fine crack links much of the legend on the reverse, though the motifs are left overall sharp. With superlative technical quality and truly enamoring eye appeal, this piece is a significant offering for both double eagle enthusiasts and type collectors.
