1868 Gold Dollar. MS-66 (PCGS).
Highly lustrous and attractive with frosty motifs set against semi-prooflike reflectivity in the fields. The strike is bold to sharp, the surfaces exceptionally smooth with a hint of silvery tinting to dominant light golden-apricot color. From a small mintage of just 10,500 circulation strikes, achieved at the Philadelphia Mint early in the Reconstruction era before gold coins returned to active commerce in the East and Midwest. It has been more than a decade since we last offered an example certified finer than MS-65.
