A long-lived charter from the seat of Barnes County in Eastern North Dakota, the National Bank of Valley City issued National Banknotes in the final 6 years of the program, and lingered until the 1990s when it was absorbed by a bank out of Fargo. In total, 32 notes are recorded for this locality by the National Bank Note Census, of which the present example accounts for the finest note recorded of those outstanding.
