Description

1783 John Chalmers Shilling. W-1785. Rarity-4+. Birds, Short Worm. EF-40 (NGC).

An ideal piece for the grade, fully struck and completely detailed over richly toned steel-gray surfaces. Centering is good, the birds side pretty much perfect in this regard, the clasped hands side drawn trivially to 5 o'clock with the denticulation thin at lower right. The surfaces have a hard, frosty texture and, while some underlying glossiness points to an ancient cleaning, the toning is natural and there are none but wispy handling marks that are easily overlooked during in-hand viewing. All in all, a very satisfying example of a classic type, struck within steps of where the Congress was meeting when the ratification of the Treaty of Paris officially ended the Revolutionary War.

PCGS# 596. NGC ID: 2AUU.

From the Windy City Collection.

Estimate: $6000
