Description

NEW YORK. Seneca Falls. Undated (1861-1865) Darius Skidmore, Skidmore's Hotel and Dining Saloon. Fuld-845A-1a. Rarity-6. Copper. Plain Edge. MS-64 RB (NGC).

19 mm. Mostly blazing mint red with wisps and tinges of blue and violet. Hotel situated at 95 Fall Street, Seneca Falls. Skidmore was the only token issuer in Seneca Falls. A contemporary illustration shows a four-floor block, three windows across each of the top floors, with a door and windows on the ground floor. Lettered across the front is SKIDMORE'S / DINING SALOON. The accompanying text includes: Nos. 93 and 95 Fall Street....Billiard rooms supplied with Phelan's Tables, combination cushions. News Room, furnished with all the latest papers, magazines, &c. Chess room adjoining. All kinds of refreshments in their season furnished on short notice. Darius Skidmore along with his hotel and tokens were the subject of an article by Terry M. Schaub published in Summer 1989 issue of the JCWTS.
