1920 Welles Bosworth Medal. Bronze, 94 mm. By Paul Manship. Murtha-125, Eidlitz-103. MS-63 (PCGS).
An extraordinary cast medal by Manship, showcased in his portfolio at the Exhibition of American Sculpture in New York City in summer 1923. The obverse depicts the architect William Welles Bosworth in profile, while the reverse showcases a kneeling Euphrosyne, the goddess of joy. Glossy dark tan with fine granularity from its method of manufacture. Immaculate surfaces and superb eye appeal suggest a grade far higher than that assigned. Bosworth, a native of Marietta, Ohio, is best remembered for his designs of MIT's campus and his guidance of the renovations at the Palace of Versailles under the auspices of his patron, John D. Rockefeller, Jr.
