Fr. 1225h. 1900 $10,000 Gold Certificate. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
Here is a choice uncirculated and well-centered example of this non-redeemable ultra-high denomination gold certificate. This design is typically found with punch out or roulette cancels, but in this case, it is perforation cancelled at right on reverse - "Payable Only to the Treasurer of the U.S. or a Federal Reserve Bank." The front indicates a "Washington Issue" variety, dated Nov. 22, 1916. We note as well that the word "Assistant" has been blacked out at center, with the word "Deputy" added in front of the Assistant Treasurer signature (F. J. F. Thiel) at bottom. As is widely known, many of these notes were rescued from the Old Post Office in Washington D.C. when it caught fire in mid-December 1935, and as a result, many of these notes display moisture spots. While a number of these fascinating notes survived, they remain a most impressive showpiece and enjoy tremendous popularity with the collecting community. PMG comments "Cancelled."
