Complete 1885 Proof Set of Minor and Silver Coinage. (NGC). CAC. OH.
The 1885 trade dollar, of course, is not included in this offering. All examples are individually graded and encapsulated in NGC Generation 4.0 holders, as follows: 1885 Indian Cent. Proof-64 BN (NGC). CAC. OH. A fully struck beauty with faded autumn-orange mint color shining through gray-brown patina that is bolder on the reverse. 1885 Nickel Three-Cent Piece. Proof-65 (NGC). CAC. OH. Dusted with mottled sandy-gold and silver-gray patina, this richly original example is further adorned with a halo of reddish-russet peripheral toning on the reverse. 1885 Liberty Head Nickel. Proof-65 (NGC). CAC. OH. A smooth and inviting Gem dressed in warm, even, golden-gray patina. 1885 Liberty Seated Dime. Proof-64 (NGC). CAC. OH. Flashy mirrored fields gleam below rich violet and blue toning with hints of green. 1885 Liberty Seated Quarter. Proof-65 (NGC). CAC. OH. Razor sharp devices stand out, surrounded by bold watery reflective mirrors and toned over with deep blue. 1885 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Proof-65 (NGC). CAC. OH. Wonderfully reflective fields have a watery gleam under original toning. 1885 Morgan Silver Dollar. Proof-64 (NGC). CAC. OH. Deep, but not dark toning graces the highly reflective mirrors. The silver coins are housed in consecutively numbered holders, 194801-007 through 194801-010, and all display similar, richly original toning in more or less mottled silver-mauve and steely-copper with vivid iridescent undertones. The two nickel coins are also housed in consecutively numbered holders: 145040-001 and 145040-002. The Mint produced approximately 930 silver Proof sets for sale to collectors in 1885, none of which contained the legendary 1885 trade dollar rarity. Of those sets that were actually distributed, most have long since been broken up, the individual coins widely scattered throughout numismatic circles. It has been years since we have seen a complete set such as this, which will surely have no difficulty finding its way into an advanced collection of classic U.S. Mint Proof coinage. (Total: 7 coins)
