Description

1652 Oak Tree Shilling. Noe-11, Salmon 9-Fi, W-510. Rarity-6. IN at Bottom. AU Details--Damaged (NGC).

67.1 grains. Attractively original surfaces are warmly toned in pewter-gray with a touch of mauve. The planchet is quite wavy, as made, although the most prominent bend at upper right obverse, upper left reverse has acquired some corrosion that helps to explain the NGC qualifier. As well, we note a couple of edge bruises at lower left obverse. That side is off center to 6 o'clock, peripheral features from 5 to 8 o'clock largely off the flan. Lower reverse border through the tops of OM in DOM. Otherwise we note full legends, inner borders complete save for at lower right reverse, tree, date and denomination all crisp. These dies are the re-engraved form of the Noe-10 Ghost Tree, with a nice strong oak tree that places this obverse among anyone's contenders for the most definitive representation of the Oak type. Most examples are relatively low grade and seldom show the overall boldness of detail evident here.

PCGS# 914808. NGC ID: 2ARL.

From Heritage's sale of the Christopher J. Salmon Collection of Massachusetts Silver, Part IV, March 2023, lot 93027.
