KM-264.2. "L.V.S." countermark on cast Chihuahua 8 Reales, both overstruck by 1817-Ca RP Chihuahua 8 Reales. The product of numerous strikes, this interesting War of Independence issue began as a crude cast crown from the provisional mint of Chihuahua, at which time it received the ubiquitous "T" and pomegranate countermarks flanking the bust. It was later countermarked with the L.V.S. stamp, and finally returned to the Chihuahua mint where it was overstruck. Somehow still quite wholesome, the coin displays each layer of its meandering journey quite clearly. Smoky gray tone enhances the coin's already substantial individuality and eye appeal.
